We assume that you boarded to join us in the sailing, but that is not compulsory. We do expect you to take care of small domestic tasks, like washing dishes, cleaning, etc. The crew will organise and divide these tasks between themselves, the skipper is not responsible for that.

Common fund

It is a good custom to form a common fund in which each member of the crew donates an equal share. The fund will be used to buy the food and drinks on board. Also fuel, water for the ship, harbour fees and small repairs will be paid from this fund. One of the crew members will be the administrator of the fund. Depending on preferences and the way of spending money the contribution to the common fund will be between €70 and €85 per week.

Paying for the skipper

The skipper does not contribute to the common fund but can eat and drink from the stock aboard. When the crew is going for dinner in the evening, the skipper will join and his expenses are paid for by the crew. This may seem very generous but many times the skipper will have his meal offered for free by the tavern.

Cleaning

When you board the ship is clean and well equipped. It is a rule to clean the ship appropriately before handing it in at Aegina. Together with the skipper the bed linen will be removed, a final dish washing organised and the ship will be cleaned all-over. If the crew is negligent in this respect, the skipper is entitled to charge €75 from the common fund. This is to compensate him for the loss of the few free hours that he normally will have between two charters.

Safety and Responsibility

The skipper is responsible for safeguarding the safety of the crew and the ship. In those cases where no consensus can be reached between skipper and crew on how and where to sail, the skippers decision will prevail also because Greek maritime law presumes this is the case. His decision will focus on safety and is founded in local knowledge, education and experience. Sometimes it may be necessary to take a quick action that may not comply with plans made earlier, but we will always try to avoid that.

For example: the crew likes to spend the night in a bay. But the weather seems to get worse and the bay gives too little protection against that particular bad weather. The skipper can then decide to find a better (safer) place for the night.

Insurance(s)

Our yacht(s) are well insured and you will have an experienced and qualified skipper. Nevertheless it may happen that the ship will be damaged. In most cases the deposit will cover the costs of repair. If, however the damage is caused by coarse negligence or by refusing to follow the instructions of the skipper, and/or vandalism, SaltySkipper may hold you personally liable.
Each member of the crew is responsible to have a proper personal travel insurance. Please verify that your travel insurance does cover risks of sea sailing.
